Whether you’re applying for a job, a license, or fulfilling a government requirement, you may be asked to complete an FBI background check. But not all fingerprinting methods are the same—and choosing the right one matters.
Here’s a breakdown:
🔹 Live Scan FingerprintingLive Scan is a digital method where your fingerprints are scanned electronically and submitted directly to the FBI or an authorized channeler. This is commonly used for in-state licensing, employment, and volunteer background checks. It’s faster because results can be returned in days.
🔹 FD-258 Ink CardsInk cards are the traditional paper-based method where your fingerprints are rolled in black ink and pressed onto a federal FD-258 card. These cards are often required when:
Submitting fingerprints to the FBI by mail
Applying across state lines or for federal jobs
Handling out-of-country or specialized agency processes
🧠 Tip: Some agencies won’t accept Live Scan from outside their state, but ink cards can be sent from anywhere, making them more versatile.
